If you've been anywhere near K-beauty in 2026, you've seen four letters everywhere: PDRN. Anua has it. Medicube built an entire pink line around it. Dr. Reju-All made it their whole identity. VT Cosmetics packed 100,000 ppm of it into a single essence. And every second skincare video on TikTok mentions it.

But what actually is PDRN? Is it just another overhyped ingredient, or is there real science behind it? And with PDRN concentrations ranging from 1,200 ppm to 100,000 ppm across different brands, does higher concentration actually mean better results?

We've done the deep research so you don't have to. This guide covers what PDRN does, how it works, the difference between salmon PDRN, Sodium DNA, and Phyto PDRN (vegan alternative), what you can mix it with, and which serums, lip products, and moisturisers are worth your money.

What Is PDRN?

PDRN stands for Polydeoxyribonucleotide. It's a fragment of DNA, most commonly derived from salmon DNA, though newer formulations use plant-based alternatives. Before you raise an eyebrow, PDRN has been used in medical settings for over a decade. Dermatologists and plastic surgeons in Korea have been injecting it to accelerate wound healing, reduce scarring, and promote tissue regeneration since the early 2010s.

The skincare version takes this same ingredient and delivers it topically through serums and creams. While topical delivery is different from injection, the mechanism is the same: PDRN activates the A2A adenosine receptor in your skin cells, which triggers a cascade of repair and regeneration processes.

What Does PDRN Do for Your Skin?

Here's what the research and clinical use tells us about PDRN's benefits:

Stimulates collagen production: PDRN signals your skin cells (fibroblasts) to produce more collagen. This is the same mechanism that makes it effective in wound healing, and it's why PDRN products are particularly popular for anti-aging.

Accelerates skin repair: By activating the adenosine receptor pathway, PDRN helps damaged skin cells repair faster. This makes it useful after procedures, sun damage, or general skin stress.

Deep hydration: PDRN has a strong affinity for water molecules, helping your skin hold moisture at a cellular level. This is different from surface-level hydration as it works from within the skin rather than sitting on top.

Reduces inflammation: The anti-inflammatory properties of PDRN make it suitable for sensitive and reactive skin types. It calms redness and irritation while it repairs.

Improves skin texture and elasticity: With consistent use, PDRN helps improve overall skin texture, making it smoother, firmer, and more elastic. Think of it as training your skin cells to behave like younger versions of themselves.

PDRN vs Other Anti-Aging Ingredients

How does PDRN stack up against the ingredients you already know?

PDRN vs Retinol: Retinol increases cell turnover (shedding old cells faster), while PDRN focuses on repair and regeneration (building new, healthier cells). They work through completely different pathways, which means they can be used together. PDRN is also far gentler so no purging, no peeling, no sun sensitivity.

PDRN vs Peptides: Both stimulate collagen, but through different mechanisms. Peptides send signals to produce collagen; PDRN provides the actual building blocks (DNA fragments) for cellular repair. Again, complementary rather than competing.

PDRN vs Hyaluronic Acid: Hyaluronic acid is a humectant that attracts and holds water on and near the skin surface. PDRN hydrates at a deeper, cellular level. Many PDRN products, especially Anua's PDRN line, combine both for layered hydration.

Understanding PDRN Concentration: What Do the Numbers Mean?

One of the most confusing aspects of PDRN skincare is concentration. Different brands measure and disclose their PDRN levels differently, and the numbers can range from 1,200 ppm to 100,000 ppm. Here's what you need to know:

ppm (parts per million) is the standard measurement. 1,000 ppm = 0.1% of the formula. So when VT Cosmetics says 100,000 ppm, that's 10% of the product being PDRN.

Percentage (%) is the other common format. Medicube discloses PDRN (Sodium DNA) at 1%, which equals 10,000 ppm.

Here's the important part: higher ppm doesn't automatically mean better results. Three factors matter beyond raw concentration:

1. Source quality: Dr. Reju-All uses pharmaceutical-grade salmon DNA at 99% purity, meaning their 1,200 ppm is highly refined PDRN. Other brands may use less purified extracts at higher concentrations.

2. PDRN type: VT Cosmetics uses Phyto PDRN, a plant-based PDRN derived from Korean ginseng. This is a vegan alternative with a different molecular profile to salmon-derived PDRN. The 100,000 ppm refers to the ginseng-derived nucleotide complex.

3. Delivery system: How the PDRN reaches your skin cells matters as much as how much is in the bottle. Encapsulation technology (like Anua's Capsule formula), molecular size reduction, and supporting ingredients all affect how much PDRN actually penetrates your skin.

Brand PDRN Concentration Source Notes
VT Cosmetics 100,000 ppm Korean ginseng (Phyto PDRN) Highest concentration; vegan/plant-based
Medicube 1% Sodium DNA (~10,000 ppm) Salmon DNA Combined with peptides & collagen
Dr. Reju-All 1,200 ppm Salmon DNA (99% purity) Pharmaceutical-grade; ultra-pure extract
Anua Not disclosed Sodium DNA Paired with hyaluronic acid complex
Abib Not disclosed Sodium DNA Lip care with collagen & Centella

Bottom line: Don't choose your PDRN product purely on concentration. A pharmaceutical-grade 1,200 ppm can outperform a 100,000 ppm extract depending on purity, source, and delivery. Focus on what suits your skin concern, then let concentration inform not dictate your choice.

Salmon PDRN vs Sodium DNA vs Phyto PDRN - What's the Difference?

If you've been reading PDRN ingredient lists, you've probably noticed that not all products use the same terminology. Some say "PDRN," others list "Sodium DNA," and a few mention "Phyto PDRN." These aren't the same thing and understanding the difference helps you choose the right product for your skin.

Salmon PDRN (the original)

This is the classic form - purified DNA fragments extracted from salmon reproductive cells (milt). Salmon PDRN has the strongest clinical backing, with decades of research behind it from Korean dermatology and plastic surgery. It's been injected in clinics since the early 2010s, and the fragment size (typically 50-2,000 base pairs) is well-studied for A2A adenosine receptor activation. When a product says "PDRN" without qualification, it usually means salmon-derived. Brands that use it: Dr. Reju-All (1,200 ppm, 99% purity) and Medicube (1% Sodium DNA).

Sodium DNA

Sodium DNA is the sodium salt form of DNA and it's the ingredient name you'll see most often on K-beauty labels (INCI lists). It's closely related to PDRN but refers more broadly to DNA-derived material used in cosmetic formulations. In practice, most Korean skincare brands listing "Sodium DNA" are using salmon-derived DNA processed for topical use. It's not a different ingredient so much as a different labelling convention. Brands that use it: Medicube, Anua, and Abib all list Sodium DNA in their ingredient lists.

Phyto PDRN (vegan/plant-based)

Phyto PDRN is the newest category - plant-derived DNA fragments sourced from botanicals like Korean ginseng (Panax ginseng), green tea, rice, or rose. This is the vegan-friendly alternative for anyone who avoids animal-derived ingredients. The key difference: Phyto PDRN typically produces smaller DNA fragments (often under 100 base pairs) compared to salmon PDRN. Both target the same adenosine A2A receptor pathway, but salmon PDRN has significantly more published clinical evidence. Phyto PDRN research is promising but still largely preclinical as of 2026 so no large-scale human clinical trials on topical vegan PDRN have been published yet. Brand that uses it: VT Cosmetics (100,000 ppm from Korean ginseng).

Quick comparison

Type Source Clinical evidence Vegan? Used by
Salmon PDRN Salmon reproductive cells Extensive (decades of clinical use) No Dr. Reju-All
Sodium DNA Typically salmon-derived Strong (same source as PDRN) Usually no Medicube, Anua, Abib
Phyto PDRN Plants (ginseng, green tea, etc.) Emerging (mostly preclinical) Yes VT Cosmetics

Bottom line: If clinical evidence and purity matter most to you, salmon PDRN (Dr. Reju-All) has the strongest track record. If you want vegan skincare and don't mind being an early adopter, Phyto PDRN (VT Cosmetics) is the best plant-based option available. And if you see "Sodium DNA" on a label, it's likely salmon-derived DNA in cosmetic form not something different entirely.

What Ingredients Can You Mix with PDRN?

Good news: PDRN plays well with almost everything. Because it works through the adenosine A2A receptor pathway, a mechanism that doesn't compete with other active ingredients, you can layer it into most routines without conflict. Here's your cheat sheet:

Layer freely (no spacing needed)

Hyaluronic acid: The classic pairing. HA hydrates at the surface level while PDRN works deeper at a cellular level. Apply HA on damp skin first, then PDRN serum on top. Most Anua PDRN products already combine both.

Niacinamide: Highly compatible. Niacinamide brightens and strengthens the skin barrier while PDRN repairs and regenerates underneath. No spacing needed.

Peptides: Complementary regeneration. Peptides signal your skin to produce more collagen; PDRN provides the building blocks to do it. Apply peptides first, then PDRN. The Medicube Pink Peptide Glow Serum already combines both in one product.

Ceramides: Apply PDRN serum first, then seal with a ceramide-rich cream. PDRN repairs while ceramides lock in moisture and protect the skin barrier.

Centella Asiatica (Cica): One of the best pairings for sensitive or post-procedure skin. Both ingredients are anti-inflammatory and promote healing.

Vitamin C: A strong collagen-boosting duo. Layer PDRN first (it's typically lighter), then vitamin C on top. Together they support collagen production through two different mechanisms.

Copper peptides: Both support wound healing and collagen synthesis. The Dr. Reju-All Copper Peptide Serum already pairs these together.

Use with care (separate AM/PM)

Retinol: PDRN and retinol work through completely different pathways and are safe to use together, but separating them (PDRN in the morning, retinol at night) is gentler on sensitive skin. PDRN's soothing properties may actually help buffer retinol irritation if you do layer them.

AHAs/BHAs (glycolic acid, salicylic acid): Safe to combine, but if your skin is reactive and sensitive, use acids and PDRN at different times. Acids exfoliate; PDRN repairs so they're complementary when spaced out.

Post-procedure protocol

If you've had professional PDRN injections, microneedling, or laser treatments, stick to PDRN, hyaluronic acid, ceramides, and cica for the first 24-72 hours. Avoid vitamin C, retinoids, and acids during this recovery window. PDRN is actually one of the best post-procedure ingredients because of its tissue repair properties.

How to Build a PDRN Routine

You don't need every PDRN product, even one will make a difference. But if you want to build a full PDRN routine from cleanser to SPF, here's the order and which products suit each skin type.

Step 1: Cleanse (AM + PM)

Start with a PDRN-infused cleanser that won't strip your skin.

For dry and sensitive skin: Anua PDRN Hyaluronic Acid Moisturising Cleansing Foam - gentle, cushiony micro-bubbles with hyaluronic acid and collagen. Cleanses without leaving skin tight.

For oily and combination skin: Medicube PDRN Pink Niacinamide Whip Cleanser - 2% niacinamide and salicylic acid to control sebum, with ceramides to keep the barrier intact.

Step 2: Tone (AM + PM)

Prep your skin and boost absorption for the steps that follow.

For dry skin: Anua PDRN 100 Hyaluronic Acid Booster Toner - deep hydration with PDRN and hyaluronic acid. Eliminates that tight, stripped feeling after cleansing.

For dull or uneven skin: Medicube PDRN Pink Niacinamide Milky Toner - a milky formula with niacinamide, a four-ceramide complex, and Centella.

For textured or congested skin: Medicube PDRN Pink Collagen Toning Gel Toner Pads - gel-soaked pads with gentle retinol and BHA for texture smoothing. PM only. Start 2-3 times a week and build up.

Step 3: Serum / Essence (AM + PM)

This is where your PDRN does the heavy lifting: collagen, repair, and regeneration.

For hydration-focused skin: Anua PDRN Hyaluronic Acid Capsule 100 Serum - affordable and hydrating serum with Sodium DNA and hyaluronic acid.

For uneven skin tone: Medicube PDRN Pink Peptide Glow Serum - 1% Sodium DNA PDRN with peptides and niacinamide for uneven skin tone and firmness.

For pharmaceutical-grade purity: Dr. Reju-All Advanced PDRN Copper Peptide Serum - 1,200 ppm at 99% purity with copper peptides for repair.

Vegan alternative for elasticity & wrinkle care: VT Cosmetics PDRN Essence 100 - 100,000 ppm Phyto PDRN from Korean ginseng, supporting visible repair for a smoother, bouncier look, with the strongest PDRN concentration on the market.

For pore concerns: Eqqualberry Purple PDRN Pore Minimizing Serum - 30,000 ppm Purple PDRN with niacinamide and ceramides for pore-tightening.

Step 4: Eye Care (AM or PM)

The under-eye area is thinner and ages faster so a dedicated PDRN eye cream makes a difference here.

For mornings (dark circles + puffiness): Anua PDRN Caffeine Rejuvenating Eye Cream - caffeine de-puffs, PDRN repairs, and it absorbs quickly under concealer.

For evenings (fine lines + crow's feet): Medicube PDRN Pink Peptide Eye Cream - salmon DNA with a five-peptide complex and retinol. PM only, start 2-3 nights a week. Also works on smile lines and forehead.

Step 5: Moisturise (AM + PM)

Seal everything in with a PDRN moisturiser.

For dry and mature skin: Dr. Reju-All Advanced PDRN Rejuvenating Cream - infused with 1,200 ppm pharmaceutical-grade PDRN. A hydrating, soothing, & rejuvenating daily moisturiser built around a high dose of PDRN, supported by niacinamide, panthenol and multiple forms of hyaluronic acid.

For lightweight daily hydration: Anua PDRN Hyaluronic Acid 100 Moisturising Cream - Sodium DNA with hyaluronic acid. Lightweight and great under makeup.

For brightening + collagen: Medicube PDRN Pink Collagen Capsule Cream - encapsulated salmon DNA with 5% niacinamide and glutathione for brightening.

Step 6: SPF (AM only)

Non-negotiable, especially if you're using retinol or acids in your routine.

For sensitive and redness-prone skin: Dr. Reju-All Advanced PDRN Calming Sun Serum SPF50+ PA++++ - a lightweight serum sunscreen with salmon PDRN, Centella, panthenol, and niacinamide. No white cast, fragrance-free, and layers smoothly under makeup.

For a brightening tone-up effect: Medicube PDRN Pink Tone Up Sun Cream SPF50+ PA++++ - PDRN-infused with a tinted, brightening finish. Sun protection and instant glow in one step.

Step 7: Lip Care (AM + PM)

Don't forget your lips as they lose collagen too.

For daytime (hydration + repair): Dr. Reju-All Advanced PDRN Rejuvenating Lip Serum - 1,200 ppm Lipozip PDRN Complex. Lightweight enough to wear under lipstick.

For overnight treatment: Abib PDRN Collagen Lip Mask Glazed Jelly - a cult-favourite overnight jelly mask with Sodium DNA and collagen.

For an overnight sleeping mask: Medicube PDRN Lip Sleeping Mask - shea butter, salmon DNA, collagen, and a plumping peptide complex. Non-sticky, candy-pink finish.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does PDRN stand for in skincare?

PDRN stands for Polydeoxyribonucleotide. It's a DNA fragment most commonly derived from salmon, though plant-based versions (Phyto PDRN from Korean ginseng) also exist. PDRN promotes skin cell regeneration, collagen production, and wound healing. Originally used in medical procedures in Korea, it's now a key ingredient in K-beauty serums, lip products, and creams.

What does PDRN concentration (ppm) mean?

PDRN concentration is measured in ppm (parts per million) or percentage. 1,000 ppm equals 0.1% and 10,000 ppm equals 1%. Higher ppm doesn't automatically mean better results - purity, source quality, and delivery system all matter. For example, Dr. Reju-All uses 1,200 ppm at 99% pharmaceutical-grade purity, while VT Cosmetics uses 100,000 ppm plant-based Phyto PDRN. Both approaches are effective but work differently.

Is PDRN safe for sensitive skin?

Yes. PDRN is one of the gentler anti-aging ingredients available. Unlike retinol, it doesn't cause purging, peeling, or sun sensitivity. Its anti-inflammatory properties actually make it beneficial for sensitive and reactive skin types. If you've struggled with retinol sensitivity, PDRN may be a good alternative.

Can I use PDRN with retinol?

Yes. PDRN and retinol work through completely different mechanisms. Retinol speeds up cell turnover while PDRN promotes cell repair and regeneration. They're complementary rather than competing. You can layer them together in your evening routine. PDRN's soothing properties may actually help counteract some of retinol's irritation.

How long does it take to see results from PDRN skincare?

Most people notice improved hydration and skin texture within 1-2 weeks of consistent use. Anti-aging benefits such as improved firmness, reduced fine lines, and increased collagen production typically become visible after 4-8 weeks. As with any active ingredient, consistency is key - PDRN works best when used daily.

What is the best PDRN serum?

It depends on your priority. For the highest concentration in a vegan formula, VT Cosmetics PDRN Essence 100 at 100,000 ppm Phyto PDRN. For multi-active anti-aging with peptides and niacinamide, Medicube PDRN Pink Peptide Glow Serum at 1% Sodium DNA. For pharmaceutical-grade purity with copper peptides, Dr. Reju-All Copper Peptide Serum. For the best value entry point with superior hydration, Anua PDRN Capsule 100 Serum.

Is PDRN better than peptides?

They're not direct competitors, they work differently. Peptides send signals to your skin to produce more collagen. PDRN provides the actual DNA building blocks for cellular repair and regeneration. Ideally, use both: peptides to tell your cells what to do, and PDRN to give them the materials to do it. The Medicube PDRN Pink Peptide Glow Serum combines PDRN with peptides in a single product.

Can I buy PDRN skincare in Australia?

Yes. Kosmetics (kosmetics.com.au) stocks all PDRN skincare products from cult Korean brands such as Anua, Medicube, Dr. Reju-All, VT Cosmetics, Abib and more. All products ship from within Australia with free standard shipping on orders over $45 and free express shipping on orders over $99.
